Street photography encompasses all aspects of everyday life. It is easy to look at street art and include the city inhabitants in the photographs. When you include people in street photography, you capture their daily habits. Whether the habits are eating, talking, or walking to work, some habits are more polarizing than others. I was struck by the commonplace act of smoking by many people I encountered and photographed. This everyday behavior, regardless of one’s personal opinion, is something one encounters when walking through a city. I did not expect to see so much of it, but smoking was everywhere. The smoke itself, the colorful packaging of the cigarettes, and the simple act of holding a cigarette, all offer a beautiful portrait of the individual smoker. The camera lens found an artistic elegance in what many consider a dirty habit.
